The Knives collection carries dive and spearfishing knives used as safety tools for cutting fishing line, kelp, and other entanglement hazards underwater, as well as for cleaning and dispatching catch on spearfishing trips. Options range from compact blunt-tip knives worn on a leg strap or BCD to line-cutter tools built for quick, one-handed use in an emergency. A knife is considered essential safety gear for both scuba and spearfishing, and we carry styles suited to the kelp-heavy diving common along the West Coast.

    Knives FAQ

Why do I need a dive knife?

A dive knife is a safety tool first. It is used to cut yourself free if you get tangled in kelp, fishing line, or rope. Spearfishers also use it to quickly and humanely dispatch fish. Many divers carry two: one on the BCD or belt and a backup.

    Blunt tip or pointed tip?

Blunt tip knives are safer and great for cutting line and prying. Pointed tip knives are better for dispatching fish. Many spearfishers carry a pointed knife for fish and a smaller line cutter for entanglement.

    Stainless steel or titanium?

Stainless steel holds a sharp edge well and is affordable, but needs to be rinsed and dried after every dive to prevent rust. Titanium won't rust, is lighter, and needs almost no maintenance, but doesn't hold an edge quite as well and costs more.

Where should I wear my knife?

Somewhere you can reach easily with either hand. Common spots include the inside of your calf, your forearm, your weight belt, or your BCD. Many scuba divers have moved away from leg-mounted knives because they are harder to reach and can snag. Never mount a knife where it blocks your weight belt's quick release.

How do I care for my knife?

Rinse it in fresh water after every dive, dry it, and keep the blade sharp. A light coat of oil helps protect stainless steel blades from corrosion.
